"The 90's Part 1: Sibling Rivalry"

4/12/11

Glam's overkill and dangerous habits ultimately destroyed his career. Meanwhile Grunge steps in to counteract Glam, but can't handle his new popularity.

CULTURAL REFERENCES

1. The metal albums mentioned were highly successful in the early 90's.

a.) The Black Album- August 13, 1991
b.) Rust in Peace- September 24, 1990
c.) Use Your Illusion I and II- September 17, 1991

2. The show in St. Louis that Speed Metal is refering to, was one that occured on July 2, 1991, at a show at the Riverport Amphitheatre. Axl Rose spotted a spectator illegally recording the concert with a video camera, and jumped into the audience after him when concert security failed to respond to Rose's request to apprehend the man. After returning to the stage, Axl replied: "Well, thanks to the lame ass security, I'm going home!" then slammed the mic on the stage, sparking the infamous Riverport riot. Axl then stormed off the stage; some people thought when he slammed the mic, because of the noise, that he shot someone. Slash told them, "He just slammed his mic on the floor. We're outta here." He then proceeded to flip off the crowd and follow Axl and the rest of the band followed. They were looking to come back out and finish the show, but as the police and security were trying to calm down the audience, a riot broke out. The band lost most of their equipment and Axl was charged with inciting a riot. He was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

3. The first song Pop Rock was singing was "Mmmbop" by Hanson. The second is "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba.

4. The political atmosphere Grunge speaks of is refering to the fall of The Berlin Wall.

5. Classic and Glam appear outside a Starbucks (although it was never mentioned). Starbucks, like Grunge, originated in Seattle and rapidly expanded in the 1990's. Not a music reference, but I found that interesting.

GOOFS

1. In the first two panels Thrash Metal has a goatee. But when he appears in the concert, he doesn't have it. Readers speculate that he shaves his face before going to see a concert.
